Agoraphobic News' list of top 45 dissonant death metal bands!

09/12/2018 Articles Share

Metal music is known for its numerous subgenres. Some of them are here for a reason, but some are a product of needless journalistic machinations. However, present day metal music is infected by the pop art logic which demands that even metal should appeal to the masses. In the words of Sodom’s front man Tom Angelripper, 80% of present day metal is pop music. Some of the subgenres that strive to become family-friendly commercial radio garbage is melodic death metal with all these cheesy melodic riffs played over and over again.  The name of the antidote that we’re desperately in need is called dissonant death metal. Such a thing wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for the musical legacy of Canadian thrash metal legends Voivod, especially due to the dissonant ways of Denis D’Amour Piggy. Well enough blabbing…before you lies a list of 45 best dissonant death metal bands. Let us know what your favorite bands from the list are and what bands should be on it!

45)Akakor

44) Abhorrent

Location: San Antonio, United States
Record Label: Willowtip Records
Bandcamp: https://abhorrentdeathmetal.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/Abhorrentdm

43) Zillah

Location: Edinburgh, Scottland
Record Label: Sea of Corruption Records
Bandcamp:  https://zillah.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/zillahnoise/

That’s the sound our ears crave for!  To hell with Nintendo-core technical death metal wankery! These guys are masters of their instruments without being lame! Zilla really knows how to spice things up! If you’re fond of bands like Canadian Martyr, Zilla is the right thing for ya!

42) Khariot

Location: Perth, Australia
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://khariot.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Khariot

Bwaaaaaaahhh! Another Aussie death metal band that has no mercy for our lustful ears!  Expect nothing but waves of disharmonic ear-melting guitar assault. Khariot may be seen as a nastier version of Canadian Martyr that leans towards more chaotic, atonal and yet high-class technical death metal style with jazz fusion influences.

41)  Vortex of End

Location: Paris, France
Record Label: Osmose Productions
Bandcamp: https://vortexofend.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/vortexofend/

is a terrific French black/death metal fury with some pretty on-spot riffage imbued by lethal doses of dissonance. Their music is kind of Bolzer meets Gorguts. Catchy, not so technical but overtly wicked, as every French underground band out there.

40) Ulsect

Location: Tilburg, Netherlands
Record Label: Season of Mist
Bandcamp: https://ulsect.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ulsect/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ulsectband/

Ulsect is a pretty young band, featuring members of Dodecahedron. Their music is a frantic embodiment of wicked noisy guitars, terrific drumming  and gruesome vocals. To some extent, their music mimics ambiental side of Ulcerate with noticeable djent influences. Teeth-gnashing stuff!

39) Zealotry

Location: United States/Canada
Record Label: Unspeakable Axe Records
Bandcamp: https://zealotry.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/zealotrymetal

Fuck yeah! Forget the present day plastic production! Zealotry will make you feel as if you are listening to some 90s death metal masterpiece! Expect nothing but raging & pretty damn elaborate songs. When it comes to commitment to the music, these guys are as zealous as their name suggests! P.S. kudos for the loud bass!

38) Convulsing

Location: Sydney, Australia
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://convulsing.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/convulsing/

Damn right.  Australia can’t go short of dissonant blackened death metal acts, that’s for sure! As the time goes by, Convulsing's music is just getting more and more wicked & atonal. This is is the ultimate one-man-band worthy of your time, especially if you’re fond of ear-molesting dissonant riffs with tons of calm, atmospheric parts as well!

37) Mitochrondrion

Location: Vancouver, Canada
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp: https://mitochondrion.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mitochondrion137
Instagram: http://instagram.com/mitochondrion137

These guys are the real deal supersonic shapeshifters.  A fine mixture of twisted sounding black/death metal riffs and the uneasy atmosphere that surrounds this band will either get you hooked, or repulsed by how they are dealing with notes. These guys have twisted notions of music!

36 ) Punished

Location: Guadalajara, Mexico
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://punished.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/punishedmetal/

Punished is a pretty damn young band coming from Guadalajara, Mexico. They only have one EP behind them titled The Absent.  What we can hear on this 18-minute-long release is nothing but groundbreaking dissonant death metal! These guys deserve some attention! Highly recommended! Tsunamis of disharmonic sounds guaranteed.

35) Morbus Chron

Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Record Label: Century Media Records:
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/morbuschron

At first, you might be fooled into thinking that we accidentally put some progressive rock band on the list. But hell no! Morbus Chron’s music might occasionally sound soft, „in tune“ and even cheerful, but their music changes drastically whenever they start being more aggressive with those tasteful, chunky, dissonant riffs.  Highly recommended to all who like death metal with a rich formula

34)  Chaos Echœs

Location:France
Record Label: Nuclear War Now! Productions
Bandcamp: https://chaosechoes.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/chaosechoes

Chaos Echœs is one of those bands that bring forth pure death metal brutality to our listening pleasure and then change the course of songs by spicing them with loads of dissonance, weird string instruments, keyboards and ambiental breaks. And hands down for these solos! They actually sound meaningful and harmonic (sometimes).

33)  Golgothan Remains

Location: Sydney, Australia
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://golgothanremains.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/GolgothanRemains
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/golgothan_remains/

Yup, Austalian death metal gone awry. Golgothan Remains just can’t afford the pleasure of playing clear notes. Their album cover faithfully conveys dissonant unorthodoxy of their musical vision.  Perverse Offerings to the Void is one of the finest releases of 2018. I can see bright future for these guys. This band expanded the boundaries of the dissonant universe.

32)  Karmacipher

Location: Hong Kong
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://karmacipher.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/karmacipherhk/

Hong-Kong based masters are a pretty young band. Their debut album, Necroracle is a state-of-art death metal release. Their music can be described as a twisted mix of Ulcerate and Artificial Brain. Guttural vocals, chilling atmosphere and over the top riffs and drumming! Highly recommended!

31)  Nightmarer

Location: Tampa, Florida
Record Label: Season of Mist
Bandcamp: https://nightmarer.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/nightmarercult
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nightmarercult/

URRRRGGHHHH! What a find! Nightmarer’s dissonant vortex will suck you in at the first listen! They are a dissonant death metal band that leans towards groove/djent oriented riffs, similar to Coma Cluster Void. Having in mind that their vocalist John Collett was delivering the goods in Gigan’s 2nd album is a good enough excuse to check these guys out!

30) Ingurgitating Oblivion

Location: Berlin, Germany
Record Label: Willowtip Records
Bandcamp:  https://ingurgitatingoblivion1.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/IngurgitatingOblivionOfficial
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ingurgitating_oblivion/

Oh my! If you’re looking for a dissonant mess in vein of Ulcerate, Ingurgitating Oblivion is the real deal! Chaotic music and vocals that sound like the almighty Steeve Hurdle… Its intensity goes from mild and calm riffs to ultra-brutal, twisted noise assault! Make no mistake; these guys are one of the strongest assets of Willowtip Records!

29) Voidspawn

Location: San Antonio, United States
Record Label: Unspeakable Axe Records
Bandcamp:  https://voidspawn.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/voidspawndm/

BRING IT ON! If you like bands like Bolzer and appreciate the dirtiness of Scandinavian metal in terms of production, but above all want some major ear-molesting death metal, you shouldn’t miss Voidspawn!   The chaotic nature of their music will get you hooked in a matter of seconds! Sadly, they only have Pyrrhic EP behind them!

28) Flourishing

Location: New York, United States
Record Label: The Path Less Traveled Records
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/flourishingnyc

A truly innovative band with guts to do things differently.  Flourishing’s music varies from progressive to ultra-noisy. No matter which side you like more, the sonic journey that awaits you will satisfy the needs of even the most demanding listeners.

27) Grave Miasma

Location: London, England
Record Label: Sepulchral Voice Records
Bandcamp: https://gravemiasma.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gravemiasma

Are you looking for blackened death metal bands with crazy atonal song structures, which, by the way, incorporate exotic instruments like sitar? Say no more! Grave Miasma is one of those bands which bridges both realms of black and death metal in their own evil & distinctive way. Their second release, Endless Pilgrimage  is overflowed with filth and dissonance and therefore suits the needs of this list perfectly.

26) Ad Nauseam

Location: Vincenzo, Italy
Record Label: Lavadome Productions
Bandcamp: https://lavadome.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/adnauseamofficial

A band with jaw-dropping skills and lethal doses of cacophony. Ad Nauseam’s extremely chaotic & atonal approach to music may trigger schizophrenia. Their Ulcerate sounding atmospheric parts are there to ease the tensions your body is going through. At least for a few seconds…

25) Geryon

Location: New York, United States
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp: https://geryon.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/geryondm

From the very depths of hell….Geryon is one of the weirdest sounding bands from the list, especially when it comes to their creepy, hypnotic bass tone. Regarding the vocals, the guy sounds like Steeve Hurdle incarnate!

24) Chthe'ilist

Location: Longueuil/McMasterville
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp: https://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/le-dernier-cr-puscule
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Chtheilist

Chthe'ilist   is a must for  all of those who worship H.P. Lovecraft and legendary Finnish death metal legends Demilich. Of course, the most intriguing aspect of this band are the vocals that will cast you out of the comfort zone for good! As always, Canadian death metal bands are damn sick and innovative! Chthe'ilist  is no exception!

23) Thoren

Location: Sterling Heights, United States
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://thoren.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ThorenDeath

If you’re tired of death metal growls and want to hear some instrumental mathcore/djent-influenced band, look no further, for we present you Thoren! They deliver some high quality head-chopping stuff, and sound like a more schizophrenic version of Coma Cluster Void. Dissonance guaranteed!

22) Teramobil

Location: Montreal, Canada
Record Label: New Core Music
Bandcamp: https://teramobil.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Teramobil/

Another frantic instrumental act. One of many Canadian bands whose dissonance-meter is about to explode! Out-of-this-world stuff with some major groove/djent punches. RIGHT IN YOUR FACE! AAAAAARRRRGHHHHH!

21) Coma Cluster Void

Location: United States/Canada/Germany
Record Label: Translation Loss Records
Bandcamp: https://comaclustervoid.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/coma.cluster.void/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/comaclustervoid/

Colossal. Merciless. Face-melting. Coma Cluster Void’s riffs are heavy as tectonic movements. Their neurotic stuff is leaning toward djent/groove style and it incorporates 7+ string guitars.  Godlike riffing guaranteed!

20) Nero di Marte

Location: Bologna, Italy
Record Label: Prostethic Records
Bandcamp: https://nerodimarte.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/nerodimarte
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nerodimarte/

One of the most progressive bands on the list, yet they aren’t short of dissonance.  Nero Di Marte really knows how to pack things together in a tasty manner.  This type of duality is what makes this band truly unique. Release the new album, damn it!

19) Sunless

Location: Minneapolis, United States
Record Label: Willowtip Records
Bandcamp:  https://sunlessband.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/sunlessband
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sunlessband/

Damn right!  Sunless delivers some top-notch material within a specific, really dark atmosphere that surrounds the music they make. One of the many bands whose albums were produced by the legendary Colin Marston of Gorguts/Dysrhythmia fame. Sunless sheds light on how dissonant death metal should sound like.

18) Okazaki Fragments

Location: Calgary, Canada
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp:  https://okazakideath.bandcamp.com/releases
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/OkazakiFragmentsband

The coolest band name ever! Okazaki Fragments  are Canadian band labeled as technical grindcore, whatever that means. They only released one album Abandoned. Prepare for screeching madness! These guys will sonically lobotomize your brains to shreds! I haven’t heard a band as crazy as Okazaki Fragments since John Zorn’s Naked City!

17 Exlimitir

Location: Ottawa, Canada
Record Label: Independent
Bandcamp: https://exlimitir.bandcamp.com/releases

Well, if you are huge fan of Demilich & Cheilist, this band will surely draw your attention! The album cover suggests that as if these two bands were having sex and brought to life new wicked-sick offspring! Exilmitir is Canadian death metal band  that will blow you to smithereens! Their debut album It Weighted Itself in Silver is bizzare, teeth gnashing release! Expect nothing but weird riffs, dominating bass rattling & Chtulu-like vocals! It sees that guys believe in underground and you won’t find them on social media!

16) Portal

Location: Brisbane, Australia
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp:   https://profoundlorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/ion

The band that defies everything and everyone. You can’t find a clear note while listening to Portal.  This band is heavier than a black hole. Their impact on the contemporary death/black metal music is unmatched!

15)Full of Hell

Location: Maryland, United States
Record Label: Relapse Records
Bandcamp: https://fullofhell.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/fullofhell/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fullofhell/

Alright! Full of Hell will grind you down! Their latest EP, Trumpeting Ecstasy  is more of a straight-forward death metal rather than their usual, ultra-violence grindcore appeal. Everything’s there, Nazgulish vocals, teeth-gnashing riffs… And yup, Spencer & Dylan are always finding new ways to make things noisier! Their entire opus is drenching in noise & dissonance and you should all respect that!

14Artificial Brain

Location: Long Island, United States
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp: https://artificialbrain.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ArtificialBrainMusic
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artificial_brain_band/

Not many bands can conjoin ultra-dissonant riffs with some major melodic parts without  losing the intensity nor integrity of their music. Artificial Brain combines the 2 elements already mentioned above perfectly! Sci-fi oriented lyrics and probably the most guttural vocals on this list give an out-of-this-world feel to Artificial Brain’s music.

13) Baring Teeth

Location: Dallas, United States
Record Label: Translation Loss Records
Bandcamp:  https://baringteethmetal.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/baringteeth
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/baring_teeth/

UUUURRRGHHHHHH!!!  Over the years Baring Teeth have developed a pretty sophisticated sense of disharmony. These guys’ use of weird, chunky chords & overall unpredictable nature of their music either hook you in or you will be absolutely repulsed by it. Keep on searching but you won’t find many bands who can par the deviant vision of Baring Teeth’ artistic frenzy.

12) Pyrrhon

Location: New York, United States
Record Label: Willowtip Records
Bandcamp:  https://pyrrhonband.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pyrrhonband
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pyrrhon_trash/

Normal people would say that Pyrrhon sounds as if their instruments are falling down the stairs. But it’s supposed to sound like that! Jokes aside, it seems that chaos is the main creative force that pulls the strings behind ‘em. Their music exceeds the wickedness of noisecore/mathcore bands while at the same time conveying death metal aesthetics to its full extent.

11) Gigan

Location: Chicago, United States
Record Label: Willowtip Records
Bandcamp: https://gigan.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Giganmusic/

When it comes to death metal, Gigan is the unprecedented champion in the use of various guitar effects. They have never been afraid to experiment with their outer space guitar sound. The whole vibe of this band can be described as Voivod meets Hawkwind on steroids. As their name suggests, Gigan are one of the biggest names of the dissonant death metal universe!

10) Martyr

Location: Trois-Rivieres, Canada
Record Label: Galy Records
Website: http://www.martyr-canada.com/

Just like Voivod, Martyr is one of the most influential, yet highly underrated technical death metal band, coming from Montreal, Quebec (the very epicenter of dissonance). Regardless of their lack of popularity, Martyr’s music, embodied through Dan Mongrain’s sheer guitar virtuosity, overshadows the whole present day technical death metal scene. The material of this band was complex and innovative to say the least. Martyr is a name big enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with their dissonant colleagues Gorguts and Cryptopsy.

9) Ulcerate

Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Record Label: Relapse Records
Bandcamp: http://ulcerate.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Ulcerate

A band whose originality transcends your everyday, normal death metal bands. Coming from New Zealand (literally the end of the world) Ulcerate brings forth tsunamis of sonic annihilation. Over the years, Ulcerate have developed their own distinguishable style. Their music, highly enriched with noisy & groundshaking guitar tone is frequently combined with unique atmospheric parts that really add the beauty to it all. Nevertheless, Ulcerate is a trio that keeps on delivering. Surely, they are one of the greatest names from the realm of dissonance.

8) Demilich

Location: Kuopio, Finland
Record Label: Svart Records
Bandcamp: https://demilich.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/demilichband/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/demilichband/

The band that started it all! Demilich can be seen as a band that laid the foundations for the creation of dissonant death metal. Demilich had slowly created an avalanche of the bands to come! Their style sounds more brutal than most of the contemporary Tampa Florida & the rest of Scandinavian death metal bands, especially in the field of freakish Cthulhu-esque vocals.  Aftrall, Nespithe is an album ahead of its time, no matter what perspective you are watching from.

7) Human Remains

Location: New Jersey, United States
Record Label: Relapse Records
Bandcamp: https://humanremainsband.bandcamp.com/

The very best of the underground! Sadly, Human Remains never released a full-length studio album. However, their EP Using Sickness as a Hero may give you a glimpse of how innovative their music was and what this band could have done in the future had they not split up. If you’re up for Death/early Sleep vocals, crazy guitar riffs and occasional Primus meets The Residents eerie guitar parts, Human Remains is avant-garde dissonant death metal band per excellence that you shouldn’t miss!

6) Pestilence

Location: Enschede, Netherlands
Record Label: Hammerheart Records
Bandcamp: https://pestilenceofficial.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Pestilenceofficial
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pestilenceofficial/

If you wonder what is Pestilence doing on this list, just take a listen to Spheres whose magnificent songs were way ahead of its time  (not to mention those jazz fusion parts)  + their latest album – Hadeon that simply overflows with slimey guitar driven voivodian  dissonance! Patrick Mameli has a huge chunk regarding the overall creation of the genre this article is concerned about. And yeah, Hadeon is by far the best comeback album of the year!

5) Dysrhythmia

Location: Philadelphia, United States
Record Label: Profound Lore Records
Bandcamp: https://dysrhythmia.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Dysrhythmia

One of the few instrumental bands on this list.  Dysrhythmia cannot be seen as a classic death metal band because of the astounding variety of their musical opus. But still, you have to give these guys credit! Both Kevin Hufnagel and Colin Marston approved their musical mastery by joining Gorguts permanently. And lest we forget that half the bands’ albums from this list were mixed and produced by Colin Marston himself, who gave all the bands additional dissonant blessing. The surgical precision and hellish intensity of Dysrhythmia’s live performance is what makes them a godlike-tier act that stands tall above the sea of amateurish colleagues.

4) Immolation

Location: New York, United States
Record Label: Nuclear Blast
Bandcamp:  https://immolation.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/immolation
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/immolation_band/

With the release of Close to a World Below  New York death metal legends went through some major sonic transformation. For  Immolation, nothing was the same after the release of this bona fide masterpiece! This game-changing album features Bob Vigna’s most twisted and disharmonic guitar work up to date! From that point onwards, Immolation kept on delivering  some major dissonant death metal classics (Majesty and Decay, Kingdom of Conspiracy & Atonement to name a few) without lowering the bar or going commercial at all! Immolation is of course, and will always be one of the greatest names in the genre!

3) Cryptopsy

Location: Montreal, Canada
Record Label: Hammerheart Records
Bandcamp: https://cryptopsyofficial.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/cryptopsyofficial/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cryptopsyofficial/

A band that never recorded the same thing twice. Cryptopsy’s path of dissonance starts with Whisper Supremacy, but it wasn’t until Once Was Not & And Then You’ll Beg albums that Cryptopsy delivered its lavishing noise to its full extent. And self-titled release & The Book of Suffering EPs follow the same trend. If Cryptopsy is good at something, it’s in balancing between melody and these feeding-frenzy outbursts of dissonance. There is really something about Montreal, Quebec scene that dominates the other parts of the death metal world. It’s about time for Cryptopsy to release another full-length studio masterpiece!

2) Gorguts

Location: Montreal, Canada
Record Label: Season of Mist
Bandcamp: https://gorguts.bandcamp.com/
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GorgutsOfficial

Aaaaaaanddd here we are! Gorguts, the band whose Obscura album unleashed all the dissonance in Pandora ’s Box fashion! Even though it was released in 1998, the album was finished in fall of 1994. Either way, regardless of the year we’re looking at Obscura is an album ahead of its time! (You can read our special about the album here).  Luc Lemay and 3 Steves made a historical statement with this all-time classic! This lineup clearly turned the whole death metal genre upside down and gave a strong momentum for the spread of unconventional musicianship.

1) Negativa

Location: Montreal, Canada
Record Label: PRC Music
Bandcamp:  https://prcmusic.bandcamp.com/album/negativa-negativa-mcd

Long behold! Negativa was a brainchild of the legendary Big Steeve Hurdle, the guitarist who, for the second time in  his career, changed the history of death metal with his partner in crime Luc Lemay! After numerous changes, Negativa’s lineup from their only studio material (2006 mini EP) consisted of Steeve Hurdle & Luc Lemay on guitars, Etienne Gallo on the drums, Miguel Valade on the bass. The band also had some unreleased songs like Deepen the Mystery, L'éloge de l'ombre. The band was about to release some more songs but that was never materialized due to Steeve Hurdle’s death in 2011.  These five songs can give you a glimpse of Steeve Hurdle’s musical thought that clearly shows how talented and revolutionary his art was, is and always will be. His contribution left a strong mark on not only Gorguts’ Obscura album, but on the scene as a whole. He was a true god of dissonant death metal.
