Top 50 Dan Seagrave album covers by Agoraphobic News!

Dan Seagrave! The death metal world would be quite unimaginable without the masterful artistry of this man. Dan Seagrave is a British artist responsible for dozens of classic death metal artworks.  He is a self-taught painter. The artwork that catapulted Dan Seagrave into the realms of death metal is the one for Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness. He is THE iconographer king of death metal music. His breathtaking art ended up on millions of CD/Vinyl album covers, and on millions and millions of bands’ T-shirts. Seagrave’s counterpart in the thrash metal world is Ed Repka. These two gave life to many hundreds of classic heavy metal releases. Seagrave’s legacy is still unmatched in the world of extreme music. So, this is our list of Dan Seagrave’s 50 album covers. Make sure to hit that like button and share this article! Enjoy!

50) Funebrarum – Dormant Hallucination (2003)

Now this is some dirty-as-hell death metal! And the art for Funebrarum’s Dormant Hallucination (2003) gives you a clue of how the band actually sounds like. Dark, brutal & heavy!  With no triggered drums! And those growls are coming straight from the very depths of hell

49) Desecrator – Subconscious Release (1991)

Pretty brutal artwork.  The blueish monster with that eerie looking red eye will catch your attention! Those sharp teeth are so common for most of Seagrave’s artwork. Desecrator is a British band from the 90s with only one album out. Subconscious Release is a must if you’re up for some classic, old school death metal sound! Mike Ford’s growls are damn good! He was killing it!

48) Conspiracy – Reincarnated  (2006)

Probably one of the most avantgarde-looking album covers that ever came out of the paintbrush of our heroic illustrator. Conspiracy’s Reincarnated shows some zombies trapped in some kind of bubbly slime. Sick, sick stuff! Dan also did cover art for the band’s release Concordat (2009). Since Conspiracy is a BLACK METAL band from the Netherlands, from the MySpace era, their music is sadly nowhere to be found on YouTube. But, worry not! You have 3 songs on MySpace. Trve Cvlt!

47) Wretched – Beyond the Gate (2010)

This one looks like the Undead Ziggurat from Warcraft 3! HAH! Cool looking, that’s for sure! When we’re talking about the music, Wretched’s Beyond the Gate  (2010) is one of those young technical death metal albums that should definitely be on your list! Killer melodic guitar harmonies mixed with groovy elements will just make your day! And it also incorporates exotic-sounding acoustic guitars and a bunch of Eastern-sounding chants & instruments! Enjoy

46) Evocation – Tales from the Tomb (2007)

Pretty simplistic for Dan Seagrave’s standards, but it still looks damn good! Evocation’s Tales from the Tomb (2007) is a sick-sounding Swedish death metal to say the least! Get ready for some head-chopping riffs!

Bandcamp: https://evocationswe.bandcamp.com/

45) Reprisal – None Survive the Sun (2018)

As the title suggests, this one is Dan Seagrave’s take on a dying sun that is about to be replaced with a newly formed one. And yeah, that barren wasteland looks awesome! Dan also did artwork for the band’s EP titled Ichneumanity (2013).  Reprisal’s None Survive the Sun (2018) is one of those albums in vein of the almighty Revocation. Highly recommended!

Bandcamp: https://reprisal.bandcamp.com/

44) Incite – Up in Hell (2014)

Wicked sick! This is the kind of hell that I wanna pay a visit! Seagrave really knows what he’s doing with his art!  Incite’s Up in Hell  (2014) is a next-gen thrash/groove metal assault that will pummel you to the ground! Killer stuff indeed! Modern sounding and in your face! That’s all you need to keep the moshpit rolling! Dan also did an album cover for Incite’s Oppression (2016).

43) Mithras – Behind The Shadows Lie Madness (2007)

A question of the day: Can Dan Seagrave draw monuments that aren’t convulsed a bit? Don’t think so! And he is really good at drawing ’em the way he pleases! MithrasBehind The Shadows Lie Madness  (2007) is a death metal gem worthy of your attention! This album is so wicked in its own right. Unique & genuine! Press play and be blown away by an intergalactic wall of sound!

42) Burial Invocation – Abiogenesis (2018)

This is it! Killer artwork for a killer band! Burial Invocation’s Abiogenesis  (2018) not only has some great artwork, but their music is by far one of the best on this list! This is a godlike-tier debut album, especially if you have in mind that Burial Invocation are a band from Turkey. Their vocalist reminds us of Karl Sanders. You MUST hear this band and buy their stuff! IT REEKS OF AWESOMENESS!

41) Micawber – Beyond the Reach of Flame (2018)

Stunning! A nice looking medieval town/castle. Micawber’s Beyond the Reach of Flame (2018) is the band’s 3rd album. A death metal release you should take a listen to! Not so technical but pretty, straight-forward, in-your-face music. BRING IT!

40) MonstrosityImperial Doom (1992)

What a damn cool title! Monstrosity’s Imperial Doom (1992) is by far one of the goriest takes of our beloved illustrator.  I mean, a zombie’s lobotomized head split wide open, with strings attached to these weird teeth… Just horrendous!  This was the first Monstrosity album to feature Cannibal Corpse's  George Corpsegrinder Fisher  on vocals. Make no mistake, Monstrosity’s Imperial Doom is a majestic Tampa Florida death metal release!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MonstrosityOfficial
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/monstrosityflorida/
Bandcamp: https://monstrosityofficial.bandcamp.com/

39) Supuration – Reveries… (2015)

Now look at that! I wouldn’t dare to come near that red demon!  Pretty cool album art for a Death/Doom metal band if you ask me! It seems that they are heavily influenced by Autopsy. So, if you’re up for some teeth-gnashing riffage, Supuration’s Reveries…  (2015) won’t disappoint you! Vive la France!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sup.supuration
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sup_supuration/
Bandcamp: https://supuration.bandcamp.com/

38) The Vision Bleak – The Unknown (2016)

The only Gothic metal band on the list.  The artwork for The Vision Bleak’s The Unknown (2016) perfectly resembles the melancholy that’s omnipresent on this album!  Dan really made it look so cold & chilling! Gothic metal is not my cup of coffee but this is some damn good stuff!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevisionbleak.official
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thevisionbleak/
Bandcamp: https://the-vision-bleak.bandcamp.com/

37) Requiem – Within Darkened Disorder (2011)

Another tank battle with egg nests of mysterious origin. Jokes aside, this is actually a masterfully crafted artwork!  Requiem’s Within Darkened Disorder  (2011) is quite brutal, politically charged Swiss death metal!  Seagrave also did album artworks for other two Requiem albums:  Infiltrate... Obliterate... Dominate (2009) & Global Resistance Rising (2018). They’re all awesome, aren’t they?  P.S. If you like Vader, you’ll certainly like this band!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RequiemSwitzerlandOfficial/
Bandcamp: https://fda-records.bandcamp.com/album/global-resistance-rising

36) Kaotik – Torment (2015)

Pretty straight forward artwork depicting some humans about to be ripped apart by the sea beasts!  Unusual but very professional piece of art! The coloring is just superb! That aside, Kaotik’s Torment  (2015)is one of those Canadian death metal gems coming straight out of Quebec City our followers would surely dig a lot! They are like a Canadian version of Obituary. John Tardy vol. 2 all the way! UUUUUUUURGHHHH!!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KAOTIKMETAL
Bandcamp: https://kaotikofficial.bandcamp.com/

35)Relics of Humanity – Obscuration (2019)

Amazing artwork for sure! Just take a look at the rapture! Brilliant! Not to mention this evil looking sorcerer and the apocalyptic surroundings of the whole thing. Relics of Humanity is a Belarusian brutal death metal band and they have just released their EP Obscuration. So, make sure to check it out! It rips to shreds! Dan also illustrated the band’s album titled Omniously Reigning Upon the Intangible (2014)

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/relicsofhumanity/
Bandcamp: https://relicsofhumanity.bandcamp.com/

34) Disgrace – Songs of Suffering (2012)

Heavy metal just can’t go without skulls… And Seagrave is exploiting that at the best of his ability!  Disgrace’s Songs of Suffering  (2012) EP is the band’s 1st release. And they raised some serious hell with it! The songs are enjoyable AF!  The riffs, the vocals…everything is in place! Their music is labeled as death metal/hardcore.  Seagrave also did cover art for Disgrace / Harness split  (2013) and for Disgrace’s album True Enemy (2015). These guys should release new album ASAP!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/disgracehardcore/
Bandcamp: https://disgracehardcore.bandcamp.com/

33) Invocator – Weave the Apocalypse (1993)

This is Dan Seagrave’s take on steampunk, I guess…  Whatever that creature is, it looks so damn cool! Music-wise, Invocator’s Weave the Apocalypse (1993) is one of those underground cult technical thrash metal albums that you should check out!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InvocatorOfficial

32) Rivers of Nihil – Monarchy (2015)

Look at that!  I would totally spend my vacation in an ancient city like that!  Rivers of Nihil has artwork done by Seagrave on their following albums: Where Owls Know My Name (2018) & The Conscious Seed of Light  (2013) but Monarchy is the real deal!  Rivers of Nihil’s music is pretty out of the box if you ask me!  They really gave a breath of fresh air to death metal scene.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/riversofnihil
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/riversofnihil/
Bandcamp: https://riversofnihil.bandcamp.com/music

31) Skeletal Remains – Devouring Mortality (2018)

Gotta love this artwork! This surely is a stairway down to hell and the guy on top knows it! This is yet another depiction of city buildings blown like leaves by the impending doom. Skeletal Remains’ Devouring Mortality (2018) is an album that needs to be in your collection!  A death metal at its finest! The vocals may remind you of Martin Van Drunen from Consuming Impulse era. Neat!

Bandcamp: https://skeletalremains.bandcamp.com/

30) Necrodemon – In the Ecstasy of Fire (2015)

Now that’s some killer cover art! Brilliantly executed! Gotta love those creatures. Necrodemon is Chilean melodic death metal band, and if you’re up for some catchy stuff, In the Ecstasy of Fire  (2015) will please your ears! No doubt about it.

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/necrodemonchile/?hl=en

29) BenedictionTranscend the Rubicon (1993)

Classic artwork for a classic band. Birmingham’s death metal veterans, Benediction, got a killer album cover for their infamous 1993 release - Transcend the Rubicon . The eerie looking atmosphere that radiates from the artwork perfectly match the brutality of Benediction’s old school death metal sound.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Benedictionband/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/benediction_band/?hl=en

28) Logistic Slaughter – Corrosive Ethics (2016)

Whooah! An obelisk made out of zombies & monsters. And it’s pretty graphic, with scenes of zombies being naughty.  Yup! This is the sick one! And man! As soon as you hear these dissonant riffs your hair will end up just like the hair of the zombie on the top of the artwork.  If you’re up for some unarticulated growls (their vocalist sounds as if he survived the pig scene from Ridley Scott’s Hannibal) and nasty slams & frenetic bass hammering, Logistic Slaughter’s Corrosive Ethics (2016) will rip your ears apart! And you’ll ask for more! (Thank me later, folks!)

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/logisticslaughter
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/logistic_slaughter/?hl=en
Bandcamp: https://logisticslaughter.bandcamp.com/

27) Stortregn – Emptiness Fills the Void (2018)

A lively and futuristic album cover, that’s for sure! If your ears crave for some melodic black/death metal in vein of Dissection, Stortregn’s Emptiness Fills the Void  (2018) is the real deal! Their music is a Swiss totentanz at its best! Plain said, killer stuff!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Stortregn
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stortregn_official/?hl=en

26) Decimation – Reign of Ungodly Creation (2014)

Just creepy!  Whatever these creatures are, they would eat your souls in no time! And as a matter of fact, this artwork is simply beautiful. Those buildings on the side are executed in an easily recognized fashion. If you’re up for some brutal, technical death metal with grindcore sounding snares, Decimation’s Reign of Ungodly Creation  (2014) is a thing you shouldn’t skip!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DecimationTR/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/decimationofficial/
Bandcamp: https://decimationtur.bandcamp.com/

25) Warbringer – Worlds Torn Asunder (2011)

Bring it! A world engulfed in flames, in the hands of two winged demons. Can it get any better than this? The artwork perfectly fits the sheer aggression of Warbringer, a thrash metal force to be reckoned with when it comes to the „new“ wave of thrash metal bands. And yeah, Worlds Torn Asunder (2011) is a kick ass album that will set the mood for headbanging any time of the day! Seagrave also did the album cover for Warbringer’s album Waking into Nightmares (2009).

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/warbringermusic/
Bandcamp: https://warbringer.bandcamp.com/

24) Paganizer – The Tower of The Morbid (2019)

Eerie looking cover! Just take a look at these gargoyles! And this green color seems like a perfect match for the apocalypse! Paganizer’s The Tower of the Morbid (2019) is yet another chainsaw-sounding Swedish death metal band at your disposal. Their music is top notch to say the least! And the vocalist kinda reminds us of Amon Amarth’s Johan Hegg. Awesome band indeed!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paganizersweden/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paganizerswe/
Bandcamp: https://paganizer.bandcamp.com/music

23) Edge of Sanity – The Spectral Sorrows (1993)

Just wow! This is one of Dan Seagrave’s most unique album covers he ever did. It looks unlike anything he had ever done. And yes, blue is the color. Now crank the volume to the max and enjoy this classic release of Swedish death metal gods – Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Edge-of-Sanity-318140074943924/

22) Devourment -  Unleash the Carnivore  (2009)

Remember that little creature from the Suffocation’s Effigy of the Forgotten album cover? Well, this is a grown-up version of it. And it looks pretty awkward and mean! And those skulls and the apocalyptic landscape that are conveyed in the artwork mimic Devourment’s heaviness  perfectly. If you’re up for some brutal death metal, look no futher than Unleash the Carnivore (2009). SLAM IT BABY!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DevourmentOfficial
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/devourmentofficial/
Bandcamp: https://devourment.bandcamp.com/

21) Lesbian – Hallucinogenesis (2016)

Well, this artwork will piss off a lot of flat earthers around the globe (and a bunch of Christians as well).  The theme of this artwork is the extinction of the dinosaurs . Dan did majestic work here! 10/10! This is actually one of the few bands on this list that aren’t a typical death metal! In fact, Lesbian's Hallucinogenesis  (2016) sounds like Mastodon with some death growls!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lesbroham/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lesbian_the_band/
Bandcamp: https://lesbian.bandcamp.com/

20) Defaced – Forging the Sanctuary (2015)

Stellar! This artwork explicitly attacks the corruption of the Holy Church. On the left, you can see the Pope taking money from his faithful follower, while on the right, the Pope’s hand is over what it appears to be a brainwashed soldier. While the Pope is sitting on his fancy throne, everyone around him looks deranged. And by the way, Defaced‘s Forging the Sanctuary (2015) is a groundbreaking Swiss death metal band with only two albums out. Face melting stuff! Check ‘em out! P.S. The full version of the artwork is even more breathtaking!

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/defaced_swiss/
Bandcamp: https://defacedswiss.bandcamp.com/

19) Memoriam – For the Fallen (2017)

Dan Seagrave’s apocalyptic vision of the future at its finest! And the devil is in the details! Dan really nailed this one! Cities in ruins, defunct tanks and soldiers with gas masks marching in a funeral procession on top of dead bodies. BRUTAL! And if you take a look, you’ll see a Pied Piper in the bottom right corner. Memoriam are hailed as the successor of the once mighty Bolt Thrower. The artwork for Memoriam’s The Silent Vigil  (2018) and Requiem for Mankind  (2019) were also done by Dan Seagrave but this one is the best in our opinion!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Memoriam2016/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/memoriam2016/
Bandcamp: https://willettsio.bandcamp.com/music

18) Trioxin – The Contingency Plan (2003)

Now this is probably the best representation of Hell I’ve seen lately. Stuff like that don’t fascinate me at all but man! This is the thing! The hellish creature mounted by zombies touring Hell…Just take a look at those two demons in the lower left corner! Hands down Dan!  And that hellfire couldn’t look any better!  Sadly, Trioxin’s The Contingency Plan (2003) is nowhere to be found on YouTube.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Trioxin-123666374362090/

17) Warfare – Deathcharge (1991)

This one is like Monstrosity’s Imperial Doom but on tons of steroids! That poor guy’s stretched face and entrails coming out of his body….Eeeeww! The amount of detail on this artwork is staggering! Hands down!  And it’s pretty disappointing to know that this is not death metal but a speed metal band! But still, Warfare kick some major ass! They kind of sound like a British version of Laaz Rockit.  Highly recommended!

16) Adrenal Asphyxia – Gorgonized (2015)

Damn! That is one of the coolest artworks done by Dan Seagrave if you ask me! A ghoulish Perseus with the decapitated head of the Medusa Gorgon…Wicked!  Adrenal Asphyxia is what Nile is for Ancient Egypt. Their lyrics are all about Ancient Greek Mythology. They play groovy, modern death metal and they are really good at it! Looking forward to a new album!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AdrenalAsphyxia/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adrenal_asphyxia/
Bandcamp: https://adrenalasphyxia.bandcamp.com/

15) Nucleus / Macabra – Fragmented Self (2017)

*Jaw dropped* Well, Nucleus/Macabra split release titled Fragmented Self ,(2017)  is one of the finest works of art ever created by our lord and savior, Dan Seagrave! The artwork looks like some sort of Ancient necropolis. This album covers stinks of awesomeness! Simply breathtaking! And for the record, Nucleus sounds as a bastard child of Bolzer & Voivod, while Macabra is straight forward death metal.  Dan also drew a cover for NucleusSentient (2016) & Macabra’s To the Bone (2016) albums.

Macabra Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pg/macabradeathmetal/
Nucleus Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nucleusmetal
Nucleus Bandcamp: https://nucleus.bandcamp.com/

14) Entombed Left Hand Path (1990)

Rest in Festering Slime! Here burn the souls of a thousand generations. Join the club!  So cool! Well, Entombed’s Left Hand Path (1990) is one of those albums that turned Sweden and the whole death metal scene upside down!  If you didn’t stare into those frosty Swedish woods for hours, you’re not an Entombed fan!  If you take a closer look, you’ll realize that the corners of the illustration are filled with Altars of Madness looking faces. And the details of Left Hand Path are simply jaw dropping! Dan also did the artwork for Entombed’s Clandestine album. Long live ENTOMBED!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/entombedclandestine/
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/entombed/
Bandcamp: https://entombedband.bandcamp.com/

13) Xibalba – Tierra Y Libertad (2015)

A clash of future and ancient past! This is jaw dropping to say the least!  This artwork represents a futuristic war machine embodied through laser tanks fighting on the outskirts of what appears to be an ancient city of Mayan civilization. Xibalba may have a strange name, but their music KILLS! The vocalist reminds us of Patrick Mameli of Pestilence! Make no mistake, you’ll enjoy every second of Xibalba’s sonic frenzy!  Seagrave also did covers for the band’s previous releases: Hasta la Muerte (2012) & Diablo, con amor... adios EP (2017).  New album, please!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/placeoffear
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/xibalbaca/
Bandcamp: https://xibalbasl.bandcamp.com/

12) Vader – The Ultimate Incantation (1992)

This is by far, one of the most awkward and yet unique and coolest looking album covers by Dan Seagrave!  I don’t know if it’s only me, but it looks like a giant praying mantis. And those 3 circular engravements are killer! Vader’s The Ultimate Incantation (1992) put Poland on the death metal world map and that’s for sure!  This album is freaking awesome to say the least!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vader
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vader_band_official/
Bandcamp: https://vader-band.bandcamp.com/

11) Pestilence – Testimony of the Ancients (1991)

With an album cover like this, you’ll get the urge to crank Testimony of the Ancients (1991) on full volume! The artwork depicts a dungeon of some sorts with "Centralobe" in the center. Whatever the meaning behind it, it’s neat to say the least! And let’s make it clear, Pestilence’s Testimony of the Ancients is an essential death metal release which is by many recognized as a peak of Pestilence’s career (including Spheres !!!).  Dan also did the artwork for Spheres (1993)and Mind Reflections compilation (1994). And yeah, Testimony was polished by Scott Burns who introduced Pestilence to the death metal swamps of Tampa, Florida! This album needs to be played live by Pestilence in its entirety!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Pestilenceofficial
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pestilenceofficial/
Bandcamp: https://pestilenceofficial.bandcamp.com/

 10) Gorguts – The Erosion of Sanity (1993)

This is it! A time machine to the good, old, high school days!  An artwork like this will make you stare in the damn thing for hours! And yeah, Gorguts’ The Erosion of Sanity (1993) was the next logical step towards the band’s then more technically profound sound. As you may already know, Dan also did cover art for the band’s debut album – Considered Dead  (1991) & for the …And Then Comes Lividity compilation (2003). We picked this one because it’s awesome + because it engraves songs like With their Flesh He’ll Create, Condemned to Obscurity, Orphans of Sickness & Dormant Misery instantly into our head! Luc Lemay did his chores with this album I tell ya!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GorgutsOfficial/
Bandcamp: https://gorguts.bandcamp.com/

9) Becoming the Archetype – Terminate Damnation (2005)

An album cover done for a Christian metal band….and it’s one of Dan’s finest if you ask me! This one shows an epic battle of good and evil, angels VS demons. And a black horseman blowing the horn ….Superb illustration!  This is one of those drawings that will actually make you wanna check out the band. And you won’t be disappointed at all!  Dan also did cover art for Becoming the Archetype’s Celestial Completion (2011) and I Am (2012). A truly awesome progressive/death metal band!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/becomingthearchetypemusic?ref=ts
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/becomingthearchetype/

8) Decrepit Birth - …And Time Begins (2003)

It just can’t get more brutal than this!  A freaking tornado made of demonic creatures sucking people in…BRUTAL! A perfect representation of approaching doom! This piece of art comes with a lot of jaw dropping details. Dan also did album covers for the following Decrepit Birth albums: Diminishing Between Words (2008), Polarity (2010) and Axis Mundi (2017) but there is really something special about their first album...And Time Begins .  And yeah, Decrepit Birth are surely one of the most technically proficient death metal bands around!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/decrepitbirth
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/decrepitbirth/

7) Hypocrisy – Penetralia (1992)

A majestic artwork for a masterpiece of Swedish death metal! Hypocrisy’s Penetralia (1992) is an eerie album cover to say the least.  Tongues coming out the walls, a reaper underneath the water, the skeletons in the header. SICK STUFF!  With Penetralia, Peter Tagtgren and Hypocrisy were in its prime!  Only few bands have a debut album as strong as this one, that’s for sure! Swedish death metal lives!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hypocrisy
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hypocrisyband/

6) Carnage – Dark Recollections (1990)

Whatever’s depicted on that album is just vile! The reddish color that dominates this piece of art mixed with completely black shadows is pretty on spot! And yes, now you have to listen to this cult Swedish death metal album once again! Carnage’s Dark Recollections (1990) is a moment in history where CarcassMichael Amott came to Sweden to bring forth some CARNAGE! Hell, this is one of the dirtiest-sounding records that ever came out from that country!

5) Nocturnus – The Key (1990)

By the gods! I couldn’t decide what’s better, the artwork or the album itself! The Alien on the space throne artwork is breathtaking! So is Nocturnus’ music! The Key (1990) is such an out-of-this-world release that gave a momentum to the whole Tampa Florida death metal scene, especially for the use of keyboards (a pretty rare thing for death metal at the time). Songs like Standing in Blood, Lake of Fire, Empire of the Sands are one of the best from the album!  This is one of many albums produced by the legendary Scott Burns in Morrisound Studios and that fact alone speaks for itself!

4) Malevolent Creation – The Ten Commandments (1991)

Mesmerizing! Malevolent Creation’s The Ten Commandments (1991) is one of those artworks that show Dan Seagrave’s work in the best light! Jesus! Just take a look at those colors!  That purple-silver-blue-red specter is so damn good! Not to mention the Mouth of Sauron-looking figure and those ancient cities washed away by the lava. Seagrave also did artwork for their album, Retribution (1992) & Stillborn (1993) , but The Ten Commandments (1991) is our favorite!

3) Dismember – The God that Never Was (2006)

Now what do we have here?  You may cry as much as you want but The God That Never Was (2006)  is a way better cover art than the infamous Like an Everflowing Stream (1991) or Where Ironcrosses Grow (2004). They are great, but there is really something special about that gas masked soldier with a sword, walking over that poor priest. And the apocalyptic, blueish surroundings accompanied by tanks and barbed wire on this piece of art is just profound!  I guess that Swedish death metal lords Dismember were satisfied with this one, right?

2) Morbid Angel – Gateways to Annihilation (2000)

This one was really hard to pick, because you have to choose between Altars of Madness (1989) and Gateways to Annihilation (2000). But there is really something about the latter. Especially when it comes to the extended version of the cover. Dreaded looking gargoyles on the right, a freakin’ black hole sucking cities in, a tornado destroying ‘em like castles made of sand… not to mention the beauty of the architecture. Regarding the music, songs like Summoning Redemption, Ageless, Still I Am, To The Victors the Spoils & Secured Limitations are the first that come to mind!  And yeah, Gateways to Annihilation is one of the best death metal albums in the past 20 years! And you have to blame Trey Azagthoth, Erik Rutan, Steve Tucker, and Pete Sandoval for that!

1) Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten (1991)

And we have a winner!  I mean, just take a look at this tremendous piece of art! There are a lot of things going on around here! Every corner of this painting is filled with tiny little details that have a life of their own. The central figure is a biomechanical creature that feeds itself with corpses in order to stay alive. And it looks just like an Orc from the Warhammer Universe. The robotic Orc has a bunch of claws, guns, and mechanical parts that enable him to wreak havoc everywhere he goes. And in the footer, there’s this mystical curled creature freshly hatched from an egg. Would pet it for sure!  The overall surroundings in this artwork are just breathtaking as well! It just can’t get any better than this. Dan Seagrave outdid himself with this one, right at the start of his career! (We are talking about the year 1991 AD!). Dan also did cover art for Suffocation’s Breeding the Spawn (1993), Surgery of Impalement (2004) & Souls to Deny (2004) albums but Effigy of the Forgotten takes the cake (Souls is pretty killer as well!). And Jesus! Now you have a perfect excuse to listen to the Suffocation’s debut! That track list is godlike: Liege of Inveracity, Infecting the Crypts, Seeds of Suffering, Jesus Wept.... I mean, the whole album is an untimely masterpiece that changed death metal forever, no doubt about that! And for the record, this album was dedicated to the late Roger Patterson, the bass player of Atheist (Rest in Peace!)
